My partner has chemo.radiation for laryngeal cancer, end of treatment suffered a year ago and was a success. So far he is cancer free. But to eat almost everything he tried, or drink, or burns, injuries and bad taste. The tongue is red, raw and burnt. The doctors say, "Hmmm, should be better now." But it is not. When pressed, the doctor just said, "that will heal with time, otherwise they will not. Who knows how to heal damaged tissue to?

It will just take longer to heal. Most radiation burns healed almost completely in about a year. If you have more than 20 treatments with higher doses, give him another year. The language will be longer than the radiation of the other body part. I must say that some people never really 100% better. There will always be lower than normal.
